The Regulation

What is the EU AI Act?

Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council (adopted 13 June 2024) establishes the world's first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence. It creates a risk-based classification system for AI systems, setting mandatory requirements for high-risk systems and imposing significant penalties for non-compliance.

Prohibited Practices

Ban on subliminal manipulation, exploitation of vulnerabilities, social scoring, untargeted facial scraping, emotion recognition in workplaces, and real-time remote biometric ID (with narrow exceptions).

Art. 6

Risk-Based Classification

AI systems classified as Prohibited, High-risk (Annex III: biometrics, critical infrastructure, education, employment, justice, law enforcement), Limited-risk, or Minimal-risk.

Art. 9-15

High-Risk Requirements

Mandatory risk management (Art. 9), data governance (Art. 10), technical documentation (Art. 11), record-keeping (Art. 12), transparency (Art. 13), human oversight (Art. 14), and cybersecurity (Art. 15).
